Grateful for the Journey of Rebirth — A Decade Together: 10th Anniversary Commemoration of the Formosa Fun Coast Dust Explosion

On June 27, ten years ago, a sudden dust explosion at the Formosa Fun Coast in New Taipei City caused a devastating disaster, resulting in nearly 500 severe burn injuries. It became one of the most serious mass casualty incidents in Taiwan’s history. This tragedy shocked the entire nation, changed countless families’ lives, and profoundly tested the responsiveness of Taiwan’s healthcare system.
Immediately following the incident, Tri-Service General Hospital activated its large-scale emergency response mechanism for mass casualties. Nearly 300 doctors, nurses, and medical personnel were rapidly mobilized to provide around-the-clock treatment. The hospital ultimately treated 65 victims—the highest number among all medical institutions in Taiwan—and successfully achieved a record of zero deaths among all patients, demonstrating the military medical system’s robust rescue capacity and the professional teamwork of its staff.
To offer blessings and respect to all survivors who bravely walked the road to rehabilitation, the hospital held a “Grateful for the Journey of Rebirth — A Decade Together: 10th Anniversary Commemoration of the Formosa Fun Coast Dust Explosion” event on the morning of August 16, 2025. A documentary film titled Confessions Ten Years Later: 10th Anniversary of the Formosa Fun Coast Dust Explosion was screened simultaneously. Survivors and medical teams from that time were invited to revisit those moments and witness the most difficult yet empowering chapters of their lives together.
On the day of the event, Major General Chen Yuan-Hao, Director of Tri-Service General Hospital, delivered a speech and invited Ms. Shu Jing-Xian, Executive Director of the Sunshine Foundation, to attend and offer remarks. Twelve survivors (Li Mengxiu, Guo Zhiyu, Lin Youxuan, Chen Ning, Liu Jiashun, Guo Xiuming, Guo Jinwei, Li Chengxuan, Li Chengjun, Hu Fuchun) and their families were present to emotionally share their ten-year rehabilitation journeys and personally thank the medical teams of that time—including professionals from Plastic Surgery, Nursing, Rehabilitation, Hyperbaric Oxygen Center, Psychiatry, Nutrition, and Social Services. Seeing the survivors walk out of their pain and rebuild their lives created a deeply moving atmosphere, touching all participants. The event concluded warmly with a cake-cutting ceremony accompanied by heartfelt words of gratitude.
